Mt Hagen Airport, Papua New Guinea

8,000 metres of Palisade Security Fence and 15 Vehiclular Gates

The

Challenge

Mt Hagen Airport Upgrade was an AusAid project undertaken in 2000 and included the extension of the runway along with the installation of an upgraded perimeter fence to meet International Airport standards. This was a far cry from the existing rural fence which was expected to stop villagers and livestock from crossing the runway. The project was an extension of the Jacksons Airport Project, and included the supply of Palisade High Security Fencing and Gates, topped with anti-climb Razorwire.

The involvement of BFH staff was signficant in securing the sale and procurement of a large volume of steel fence material and gates. A challenging exercise to guarantee the supply and delivery given the road trip between Lae and Mt Hagen is notoriously bad for many reasons.

The

Results

The project was completed over a long period of time. All manufactured items were placed into local storage during a long and protracted period of negotiation with local Government and Landholders.

The installation of the fence was undertaken by a local building company.

The completed project exemplifies why palisade fencing is the ideal export product. The entire procurement was undertaken without knowledge of where it would ultimately be installed, yet 99% of the materials can be utilised due to palisade's ability to articulate and follow any terrain. Palisade flat packs perfectly for export, a feature not easily achieved with pre-fabricated panel type fences.
